Better Care Medical

When and in what Third World area should I provide free medical care?

I am currently 17, and after college I want to attend medical school. At some point after getting my degree I would like to spend a year providing free medical care in impoverished areas like rural India or Senegal. At what point in my career could this be done (right out of medical school, after internships, etc.) and what impoverished area do you think could most use the help?

  1. You're only 17 and 10 years or so could change a lot in the world. Perhaps you should wait until you're done and you've achieved your medical degree - THEN decide where to go. Better yet, join an organization like Doctors Without Borders - they will send you to a place that needs the most help.
  2. after internships and one year of residency
  3. Wherever you go it should be rather Africa or areas in Asia where there is no war going on I would suggest Somalia it used to have war which has ceased but now there is raging poverty there.
  4. study abroad during your undergrad to get a feel where you would like to contribute. that's what i did and continue to go back to that area and many others post-medical school. many other places in the world are hurting for medical care. you may want to consider areas in sub-saharan africa, and in the USA.
